Private Health Insurance

Those of us that don't have access to an employer-sponsored health plan (for whatever reason) will generally opt for a private health insurance policy instead. For most of us, this isn't exactly an easy process. Anybody that has a life to live--which presumably includes everyone on earth--is naturally going to be reluctant to put much precious time or energy into a task that seems like more trouble than it's worth. This goes for food, fuel, entertainment, and most anything else where people find themselves paying for convenience rather than looking for a cheaper alternative.

In many cases, there aren't too many negative consequences for simply buying the first thing that we come across instead of shopping around. Unfortunately, for those who lack access to any other other health coverage, private health insurance can become one of the most easily-disregarded purchases: faced with the idea of spending many tedious hours comparing rates and policy details, it can be very tempting to simply go with the first reasonable-sounding offer we come across and move on to more pressing or interesting matters.

It's true that a casual approach to shopping often works out well enough, but at times when the household budget begins taking hits due to rough economic conditions it's usually a good idea to go back and see what can be done to get more bang for our buck. What most people in these situations don't realize is that there are some simple ways to cut down on the amount of effort required to make your health insurance dollar go further.

Obtaining Private Health Insurance

The first thing to keep in mind is that, for private health insurance providers, there are almost always customer review and rating sites that will help you to single out companies you'd rather not do business with. Cutting contenders out of the field of choices can make a choice between the remaining options that much easier. Secondly, figuring exactly what kind of policy you're looking for ahead of time can save you considerable headaches when you get down to the stage of choosing between different companies; there's little use in comparing rate quotes if you haven't already decided whether to go with a high or low deductible, for example.

The third, and arguably most important, consideration is that there are certain steps of the shopping process that you shouldn't need to put too much time or effort into. Instead of going through each company's quote-generation process by hand, one by one, you might consider using third-party services to request quotes from a large swath of companies simultaneously. This will give you the advantage of time and a large field of options (which you can then narrow down at your leisure by ignoring companies you don't like, as mentioned above). Above all, the best thing that any health insurance shopper can do is keep informed about all the options that are available.

You did a great job on getting quotes on different health-insurance plans. I was surprized at how fast I received them. All the agents that contacted me were very nice. Thank you

I spoke to an agent - she was wonderful! Thanks so much. She listened closely to what I needed, and gave the advice that was best for ME not one that made her money.
